Thereupon he goes into his anteroom, fetches the remaining files and stacks them on his desk to go through them one by one at night, while outside slowly a heavy snowstorm sets in again.

While the Leytenent sits down on the chair assigned to him, the Mayor takes two glasses and a carafe of vodka from his shelf, places them on his table and toasts the glorious Soviet Union together with the Leytenent.

So what I wanted to ask Leytenent: Next week there will be an exercise in preparation for the fight against the Japanese armed forces. One of our infantry regiments should play a crucial role in this. I was thinking of the 42nd Guards Rifle Regiment. Please inform and instruct the commanding officers and please check the regiment's supply situation. I don't want to have any nasty surprises! Please also call the commanding officers to my office, for personal instructions. I want to see them tomorrow. Well that's it Leytenent ... and before I forget ... The Mayor pours another glass of vodka for his adjutant.

Mayor Domitian is now putting away the glasses and the carafe, wondering what's going on with his secretary, who has been looking a bit strange and absent-minded for a few days.

It was another very windy day when Dome inspected the 13th Guards Rifle Division. First he went to Mayor Domitian.
When he arrived at the command post, he first met Anastasija, whom he greeted with a smile first.

Very good that you are asking about it, Comrade Mayor, because I just received a telegram from my adjutant Leytenant Popov. According to his information, the troops are in general combat readiness. All missing consumables such as ammunition and food, especially for the upcoming exercise, have arrived. I have already instructed the commanding officers. I also have to note that I will be keeping an eye on the 42nd Guards Rifle Regiment in particular. Although I expect great achievements from this regiment, while we exercise, but there was also some friction among the soldiers since the past weeks. However, I have already cleared and clarified these.

While he is speaking, the Mayor reaches into one of the pockets of his uniform, takes out a pack of cigarettes and offers one to Comrade Mayor Dome.

After a long and exhausting day in the regimental headquarters office, Mayor Domitian decides to check on his secretary Anastasija one more time. He had already noticed her calmer and more distant behavior in the last few days and he wanted to finally address it, since nothing has changed in this state in the past day. The Mayor puts out his cigarette and opens his office door and sees his secretary who is about to finish work for the day.


Anastasija? Do you have a minute for me?

Oh, of course, Comrade Mayor. I just didn't expect anything to be discussed so late, Anastasija said in a slightly hesitant voice.

It isn't anything important Anastasija. I just noticed that you have been more reserved than usual the last few days, almost too quiet. I just want to make sure that everything is okay with you and that if something is bothering you, you are very welcome to talk to me about it.

That's very nice, Comrade Mayor. But there is nothing to talk about. I've just been a bit tired and exhausted in the last few days. In addition, it takes getting used to being so far away from home. Sometimes it's not easy for me.

With all his experience the Mayor sensed that Anastasija was not telling him the whole truth. However, he decided not to dig any further and not to press her. Either the problem would resolve itself, or sooner or later he would inevitably find out about it.

Well, Anastasija. Should you still need something at some point, my door is always open for you. Since I don't want to keep you from finishing work, I now wish you a good night.

Anastasija said goodbye to him with a short smile before she quickly left the anteroom with her briefcase.
